We’ve decided to cancel funding for our latest Switchboard Kickstarter just one short week into the campaign. Don’t worry though, this is a good thing and here’s why…

Our inbox has been buzzing the past few days and we’ve received an enormous amount of interest from three distinct groups of people – individuals that need an easy, fast, and secure personal VPN, businesses that want an enterprise quality solution for faster and more reliable Internet, and, finally, massive carriers who say they can run the network of speed servers cheaper and better than we can. Many of the companies wanted to support us, but could not give to a Kickstarter campaign.

With Switchboard we can help all of these people – but in each of these cases, our backers want to run their own Switchboard Servers, either at home, at the office, or in a data center instead of always connecting through ours in the cloud.

Two lucky Switchboard backers just got themselves early access to the latest Switchboard Beta, so they can try the newly-minted San Jose, CA server for a few days!

As we mentioned in Friday’s post, we’ve asked our Switchboard Kickstarter backers to tell us where they want the next Switchboard Speed Server to be rolled out by voting for their location via Kickstarter comments, Facebook posts, and Tweets with the hashtag #backswitchboard. Well, over the weekend the votes have been rolling in. While over 100 requests came in from Topeka to Thailand, the new server to go live is in San Jose, CA, giving all you folks in Silicon Valley a Speed Server to call your own. As promised, we’ve picked two backers to try out an early Switchboard Beta with the brand new San Jose server and let us know what they think! We’re already getting these two lucky backers setup to take Switchboard for a test drive. Stay tuned to hear what they have to say.

Well, the data is starting to flow into wheredoyouwantfasterinternet.com, and I’m really excited about the results of our experiment to crowdsource the roll out of our Switchboard “Speed Servers.”

I think that we did a decent job at first approximations: The first couple servers in Europe, the US, and Australia did land near the biggest hotspots of users. But as the demand came in, we quickly lit up more servers: France and the US Midwest needed better service, STAT! And now they have it.

Obviously, there’s an enormous hole in our coverage around Silicon Valley (surprisingly, it seems there are a lot of technology users there. How odd.). Right now a couple engineers here are working on getting a box up in San Jose. You should see them by the end of the day, if they’re not up already.

Once the San Jose server is up, we’re going to be contacting a couple of our backers on the West Coast in order to get them the latest pre-beta software. The backers will get a taste of the software and speed that we’re offering, and we’ll get some real data from users to factor into our designs.

Next I think, we’re going to have to turn our attention towards Asia: Japan and India are rising in demand quickly. So, if you want to see those, or any other regions go live first, just leave a post in our Kickstarter comments section using this format: “I want faster Internet in (city, country)!”, and we’ll add your request to the heat map above. If social media is your thing, you can also Facebook or Tweet your location (with hashtag #backswitchboard), to cast your vote. But, in the meantime, here’s an ode to our newly-minted server over on the West Coast!

Connectify 5.0.1 is here! This is a minor new release of Connectify Hotspot and Dispatch that is mostly focused on improving stability.

• Licensing Bug Fix: Fixed bug where Lifetime Licenses were shown with fictional expiration dates
• Compatibility with Download Accelerator Plus 10: DAP 10 users could not access the Dispatch Dashboard, and got only a ‘spinner’ when attempting to display it. If you have DAP 10 installed, or the Dispatch Dashboard show only as a ‘spinner’ on a white background, disable ‘Use Dashboard via file://’ in the Options menu of the Dispatch system tray icon, then close and reopen the dashboard.
