THIS WEEK’S USER SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON AVI FROM DELHI, INDIA!
When Avi wrote to Connectify, he told us his Internet runs on wireless data from a 3g provider in India.
Like many of us, he has 2 laptops and a Samsung Galaxy phone. He works as a doctor, so his devices are always data hungry.
He knew that Wi-Fi capable laptops could be turned into hotspots, but didn’t have luck while trying to configure it himself… or even with his engineer friend Surya.
Cue: Connectify! After Googling “turn computer into a wi fi hotspot,” he found Connectify at the top of the results. He said “the name seemed good to me,” (thanks, Avi!), “and installation was a small file.”
After taking the risk to download Connectify, Avi couldn’t be happier. “What wonders this could do,” he said. “Very easy to configure. I never change sim now to connect my phone or check mail and chat. Connectify is ultimate.”
This doctor definitely has the brains!

THIS WEEK’S USER SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON MATT FROM TOKYO, JAPAN!
Matt told us he was living in military barracks at the time in an “undisclosed Southwest Asia location,” with pretty decent wireless access but only in his room and WITH the help of a 1 watt Wi-Fi adapter and a pesky antenna. He explained he was unable to connect smaller devices like his iPod Touch to the network because of low signal strength. “With Connectify,” Matt said, “I was able to take the wireless signal from my desktop/large antenna and basically make a repeater station in my room. This allowed me to use my iPod touch to text/call home. When you’re deployed, keeping in touch with your family is the MOST important thing.”
Recently, Matt used Connectify in a military exercise with very limited Internet capabilities. With only one small router and about 10 computers, Matt used his computer equipped with Connectify to share his Wi-Fi to the others in his group within minutes. “It’s a lifesaver, man,” his teammates told him. “Thanks so much for hooking that up!”
Funny. We thought you all were the lifesavers. Thanks for your service.

THIS WEEK’S USER SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON JHEN FROM CAVITE, PHILIPPINES!

We love users like Jhen! She didn’t hear about Connectify from a friend, or perform a web search about how to turn her laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot. In fact, she didn’t even know it was possible.
“I happened to open a blog that caught my attention,” she told us. “I wondered whether it was true that it could actually turn my laptop or net-book into a WiFi router.”
Jhen downloaded Connectify and instantly loved it. Before, her entire family was running on separate broadband connections, costing them lots of money. But now? That’s all changed.
“I can now do my research for school homework and projects without having doubts on how much we are spending. Thanks Connectify for helping us save money! =)”
Jhen, thank YOU for sharing your story!

Connectify has a new concept called a “Peer,” and we wanted to give you a quick tutorial on what exactly a peer is, and how you can interact with your peers in Connectify. You can view your Connectify Peers in the Clients Tab, just below the usual “Connected to my Hotspot” section:

A “Peer” is any computer that your PC detects is also running Connectify, on any network that is shared with your PC in some way, perhaps sharing a Wi-Fi or LAN network with your PC. You can transfer files to connected devices or to Peers, share iTunes, and run various other services. These functions operate much easier than in the past, as services now show up under the specific peer they serve:

Now that you understand Connectify Peers, we want to give you a chance to win a FREE copy of Connectify v3.3. Just comment on this post, with your favorite aspect of the new Connectify release. Winner will be selected Monday 3/5 at 12p and will be notified via e-mail.

THIS WEEK’S USER SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON JAY FROM DILIMAN, PHILIPPINES!
Jay says “Connectify? It came when I needed it most! Wooh
” Like many of our customers, he found out about Connectify by doing a simple search on the web – and it has been a part of his life ever since!
“As long as my laptop is on, Connectify is with me everywhere,” he says. “Connectify is a great help for my wireless devices to be connected, not just for Internet purposes but also for handy transferring of files!”
When we asked Jay why he liked Connectify he said, “Isn’t it obvious? Connectify is not just an application but it is a friend that connects you to everybody!”
If he had to describe Connectify in just 3 words, he would say: “working, connecting and amazing!”
Aw…thanks, Jay!

Connectify now lets users transfer files to computers and other devices. This can take place within a Connectify Hotspot, or between your PC and any other Peer connected via any network. The Connectify file transfer feature makes it very easy to send files between PCs, using the built-in Wi-Fi connection you already have, no need for USB sticks or other “sneakernet” methods. And no need to let people mess around in your PC; they only get the files you send them.
Peer to Peer File Transfer
To send a file to another PC that shows up in your Peers List, it’s as easy as drag and drop. Let’s say I have a file called “Einstein-2012-Feb-17-004.mp4″, which in fact I actually do. This is a 7MB MPEG-4 AVC video file, and I’d like to send this over to the PC called “Old Acer”. This PC is on my Hotspot, but since it’s running Connectify, it can do the same peer to peer transfer as any of the Peers. I simply left-click on the file, drag it over to the Connectify user interface, and drop it on “Old Acer”. Here’s what happens:

Now, let’s look over on “Old Acer”. When a file transfer request comes from one Peer on a network to another, that other Peer has a chance to accept or reject the file. Connectify will pop up a message such as this:

Here, there are quick buttons to either decline the transfer or save directly to the Windows desktop. The center option brings up a file dialog that allows you to save the file wherever you like. Now, I press “Save to Desktop” on the “Old Acer” PC, and see this:

The file transfer in this case went too fast to catch a screen shot in the middle. But now my 7MB video file is happily on the Old Acer PC, awaiting my viewing pleasure.
What About Mobile Devices?
File transfers aren’t always PC to PC, of course. But your devices aren’t running Connectify, and some (in particular, iOS devices) don’t even treat files the way PCs do — there’s no file browser, for example. Not to worry, this is also handled in Connectify. Let’s say, rather than dragging my video file to “Old Acer”, I instead drag it to “Dave’s Galaxy Nexus”, my handy Android 4.0 Smartphone. You see this message from Connectify:

What this says is pretty simple: if you’re on any device not running Connectify, just go to the given web address (type it exactly as shown in the Connectify dialog box). Here’s what I see on my phone:

As you can see, Connectify is delivering a web page to my device, along with a link to the file(s) being sent. I click on the link, the file downloads to my phone, and shows up immediately in my personal video collection. Each device will treat this link a little differently, but every modern connected device knows what to do with web downloads.
There’s also a link to click to learn more about Connectify. If the connected device had been a Windows PC rather than an Android phone, there would also be a link displayed to let the client immediately download Connectify. And if I had viewed this web page on a connected PC, I would not have found the file link. Connectify file transfers only go to the intended Client or Peer.
