Announcing Connectify v1.2!

Posted by agizis on March 30, 2010 under Uncategorized

We are proud to announce the official release of Connectify v1.2!

In addition to numerous bug fixes, new features include:

  • Improved Ad Hoc Support: By popular demand, Ad Hoc now supports “Open” (no encryption) mode
  • Connectify Easy Setup Wizard: Connectify gets even easier to start with thanks to our new simple to use wizard walks you through your first setup of your network, and helps explain the process and options.
  • Improved User Interface: The Connectify window stays visible until you minimize it (so you can keep it up to watch devices connect, if you desire), and there are improved messages and tool tips throughout the program.
  • More Statistics: The tool tip on the Clients now reveal even more information: how many times the device has connected, the total time that they’ve been connected, and their MAC addresses.

We hope you enjoy it. From Connectify, you can click on the menu and select “Check for Updates,” or you can go straight to our homepage.

WOW! "Improved Ad Hoc Support" sounds promising !!

Can confirm that this version (somehow) works on RTL8187L adapter with Microsoft drivers. However, every time OS (Win 7 x86) is rebooted i get "Connectify corrected settings" and sometimes hot-spot service can't be restarted which prolongs Win shut-down almost to infinity. Other than that, great peace of free soft.

Okay, read the excellent FAQ for Support, and it suggested something, which made me think of something, which ended up makeing it work once more. The WI-FI card connection needed to be marked as "Shared" in order to share. Having ICS running in services was beside the point, if your WI-FI card wasn't allowing shared mode to be activated by Connectify. So if you have the same message I previously had, "Activate Internet Connection Sharing in services", go check out the ICS settings for your WI-FI card connection instead. Thanks Connectify! I'm back in the hotspot biz once more. :)

The reason people want WEP support is to get devices that only support WEP access to the internet without changing router settings.

For example, i'm only interested in WEP support to get my Nintendo DS connected to the internet as it doesn't support WPA(2) and i don't want to change my router settings.

very useful for android devices because they don't see ad-hoc networks! thanks!

You guys have done a completely brilliant job with this. Worked straight away. I am not very geeky, but had meesed about with ICS and ad hoc and it kept breaking. This tool is a complete winner.

    Well done guys!

Yes we need WEP or OPEN AP for a number of gaming devices. Also wold would like to see the ability to toggle profiles. Like between a home Nintendo DS profile and a work secure AP profile.

  • Frank

For those of us worried about security (all) but still want/need WEP or OPEN I think we could extend the profile concept to include:

A connection availability timer that would expire in xxx minutes

    MAC address filtering

    Maximum attached clients

    Hide SSID

Now none of these make a fundamentally insecure connection secure but maybe they make it more tolerable than reconfiguring you main wireless AP to allow temporary connections to gaming devices.

Hi! Can not connect my Nokia N96. When connecting the phone says "no gateway reply", though other phones (Nokia E65 SonyEricsson W960, Toshiba G910) are connected properly. How to fix this problem? Sorry for my English, I from Ukraine. Thank you.

    Does the developer read comments?
    1. Sometimes i have a problem with error "Try to restart service in "Windows Component Services". But there are no such services.
    2. Can you remove a message about possible problems with VPN connections (or at least make it optional)?

I am just wondering, why does AD-Hoc open mode not support sharing through the wifi card?

this work fine but Wep Wpa is missing :'(

you say : "Ad Hoc now supports "Open" (no encryption) mode"

I'd love to use this at work, but without being able to hide the ssid, I'll get into trouble.

Any chance of this functionality being introduced?

I notice Connectify does something disastrous…it actually manually selects 192.168.2.1 as the ICS sharing address by way of modifying the registry…that is a very bad idea because if someone is in a network that already is making use of 192.168.2.1 as the router then you have an infinite loop and thus no internet access for the host machine and the clients (via the virtual wifi).

The smart thing to do is NOT modify the registry entry…more specifically Connectify modifies the values: ScopeAddress and ScoreAddressBackup and makes them 192.168.2.1 … Dont do that…just leave it the way they are and read from it, not modify them.

Thank goodness for VirtualRouter (your competitor)..they realize this and dont modify the registry entries…

If you want to modify then at least give the user the option to set what they want the ICS address to be instead of assuming 192.168.2.1.

btw, you might want to update your supported adapters list…chipset RTL8187L now works if you upgrade to the Win7 drivers offered exclusively on Realtek's website.

However Connectify STILL has that major bug of purposely setting the ICS address to 192.168.2.1 instead of just using the default in the registry or allowing the user to enter his own. Recall that if a gateway is already at 192.168.2.1 then the whole internet goes down on the network when ICS is enabled….granted the default ICS address is 192.168.0.1 at least you can modify this in the registry but your implementation hardcodes it to always be 192.168.2.1 regardless of what you change it to in the registry rendering Connectify useless for people already using 192.168.2.1

    @Questrade Coupons and Promotions Lover
Thank you for posting your concern, however Connectify is not hardcoded to use 192.168.2.1. It automatically picks an IP address/range to ensure that it is using one that is not in conflict with whatever networks you are currently connected to.

If you've ever actually seen an IP conflict or routing problem, please
send your logs (Menu->Support->Generate Log Files) to
    support@connectify.me.

    Thanks again,

Logs sent yesterday…hopefully you can see for yourself that there is clearly an underlying error in the program that is causing it to think 192.168.2.1 is available when in fact it is not….I stand waiting and willing to give you any more details you might need in identifying the problem….

What is a bit strange is that i see a registry write call to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicesSharedAccessParameters

Values: ScopeAddress and ScoreAddressBackup are modified from their ICS specific value to 192.168.2.1 every time Connectify starts hotspotting….

When i use VirtualRouter it does not do tihs..it simply just reads the value(s) and does not modify it….the reason this is a concern is that when ics is enabled it is this value that windows uses…so any modifications here becomes the new ics ip address….and in this case Connectify always uses 192.168.2.1….its very strange…like i said, if you need more tech info from my side just let me know (you have my email address).

I cannot connect to my Android today, though it used to work very well. My only idea is that anotehr network is disturbing the connection on the same channel. So what channel are you using?

Since upgraded to 1.2, i keep getting "connetify service down". At first I thought it was my pc, then i tried on brand new windows 7 laptop. At first it works fine but after a while i keep getting the same prob. Switching back to version 1.1. Hope you can fix this since I really love your works.

I too have issues with the 192.168.1.2. I would very much like:

    1) Don't share settings with ICS unless you have to.
    2) No matter what, provide an area in the UI to select a specific address if desired.

Works great. One thing though. How do you control which wireless channel is used? I changed the Ad-Hoc channel setting in the driver (Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN) from 11 to 9, but Connectify is still using channel 11.

Maybe I just need to reboot?

    @bogdkad
I also have prob and fed up with error "connectify service down" which appeared when i upgrade to version 1.2. Instead using Connectify, i using this method:

    1. Open up the Run command with Administrative permissions and run:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=Hotspot(change to your desired ssid) key=passwordhere

    2. Set the network adapter with:
    netsh wlan start hostednetwork

    Works flawlessly without hitch.

before adding another comment on how much we ds users (or other users with devices that only support wep encryption) want to have wep for ap mode, i'll try it the other way 'round:

is it even possible to add such an option? if i'm not mistaken, the connectify software works based on the win 7 virtual wifi function. as far as i know, it only supports wpa…? so does it even make any sense to ask again and again for the wep support or is it impossible to implement it?

  • Questrade Coupons and Promotions Lover

    Posted on 5-25-2010

@Elena – I am not the developer but as far as i know it is impossible to support WEP for the Virutal Wifi option…that is, unless you rewrite the entire thing and utilize WEP from the ground up but my guess no one will do this.

@Luz – yup that is how i get around all these bugs and problems offered by Connectrify and Virtual Router…seems easiest and best to use the Command Line

  • Elena

    Posted on 5-27-2010

@Questrade Coupons and Promotions Lover – Thanks, so I'm not alone with the opinion that it would be impossible or at least very difficult to implement it. I just wondered why noone answered the requests just like you did now to me. Those people who wait for a WEP support for AP mode wouldn't have to wait for a feature that can't be implemented and ask for it continuously…

Still I think connectify is a great solution for those who want to share their internet connection. I used to do this via the Virtual Wifi before, and I'm glad that someone had the idea to make a GUI for this…

For PSP and NDS there is still the possibility to change the router's configuration as needed, until another solution is available.

@malc G — Follow the wizard it has an ad hoc option, its not really a hotspot you just chose the ad hoc option and all your friends/devices can access the net through your connection

At the moment, it does not appear that you can change the wifi channel in connectify. I use the appliation with my wimax connection, but connectify uses channel 11 which causes interference with my wimax. If I could just set the channel to 1, this app would be perfect.
